Extensions and Alterations to a Grade II listed dwelling near Godalming, Surrey

The host dwelling is a Grade II listed three bay timber framed cottage located within a Conservation Area, Green Belt and Surrey Hills National Landscape. The listing notes that the original cottage is late C16 or early C17 but other experts believe the date was probably just before 1600 as this is a smoke bay house. Historically, it had a long timber barn structure attached to the righthand side. This had been demolished prior to our appointment and the cottage had been scarred by its removal. A two storey rear extension and two porches had been added in the 1970s which were not of the highest quality of construction. The building itself was in a poor state of repair and needed significant care and attention to bring it back into habitable use, but also importantly; protect its future for another 400 years.

In addition to the sensitive renovation, our proposals comprised the removal of the existing entrance porch to the side elevation and its replacement with a single storey extension housing a new kitchen built in a form redolent of the original attached barn.  An additional dormer was added to the rear elevation and the existing 1970s garage demolished and replaced with something more in keeping with the attractive dwelling.
